Tollgate is an x402-compatible API gateway that adds spend control, budget delegation, and signed receipts on top of the x402 payment protocol. It gives agent payments the control plane that x402 leaves out—hard caps, hierarchical budgets, and provable expense reports.

x402 is the payment protocol. Tollgate speaks x402 and adds three things x402 doesn't do: enforcing hard per-request and total spend caps, enabling parent agents to delegate scoped budgets to sub-agents with one signature, and returning signed receipts proving what was spent, where, and when.

Tollgate settles on Base Sepolia (testnet) using native USDC. Settlement happens in batches off the request path, so one on-chain transaction can cover dozens of paid API calls. Gateway latency stays under 15ms p50.

After batching, settlement cost stays well under $0.001 per request. A single batch transaction on Base covers 100+ requests, spreading the gas cost across all of them. This makes micro-payments economically viable.
